This album features two outstanding string quintets by French composer Georges Onslow. Onslow's music was highly acclaimed at the time, and he was even called the "French Beethoven," but until recently his works had been forgotten. These works truly demonstrate Onslow's talent for richness of melody, clarity of structure, and depth of expression. The world premiere recording of No. 25, dedicated to the famous 19th century Belgian cellist Adrien-François Servais, was made possible after the discovery of the original manuscript score in a private collection related to Servais.
Ensemble Tams, highly acclaimed for its chamber music performances of the Classical and Romantic periods using ancient instruments, not only follows the traditional performance style, but also seeks to create a dialogue with contemporary audiences by incorporating ornamentation, rubato, and improvisational expressions that are essential for the "beautiful performance" intended by the composer.This recording also provides the audience with the full appeal of this long-overlooked masterpiece of Romantic chamber music.
