Description:
Polish saxophonist Maciej Obara makes his ECM debut. This is his ninth album in total, and it is a substantial one that offers a wide range of performances, from gentle lyricism to passionate and powerful playing. Except for M-4, a piece by Krzysztof Komeda from Poland, all of the pieces are Obara's original compositions, and although they all have a definite outline of the theme, the sound is generally free. The members are all great improvisers. They are great improvisers, and it's fun for me to let them move around freely in a free space, giving form to what's in my head and adding color to it. It's like composing on site." The project has been several years in the making. Obara and pianist Dominik Wania met about 10 years ago in the Thomas Stanko Ensemble, and in 2012 they were joined by two Norwegian bass players, Ole Morten Vagan on bass and Gard Nilssen on drums.Vagan has played on Thomas Stronen's "Time Is A Blind Guide" and Nilssen has played on Mathias Eick's "Skala" at ECM.
