Description:
Michelle Ndegeocello is one of the greatest producers, bassists, singers and songwriters of our time. She has already released her first new album in a year, "The Omnichord Real Book," which won a Grammy Award for its Blue Note debut in 2023 and a sold-out show in Japan in February 2024. Inspired by the works of James Baldwin, the "Angry Black Writer" who will celebrate the 100th anniversary of his birth on August 2, 2024, the album depicts a world that transcends various genres and is unique to her.Dedicated to this great writer who attempted to connect social divisions with love by focusing on social and psychological pressures related to racism and homosexuality, the album also includes songs with titles reminiscent of Baldwin's writings, such as "On the Mountain" and "Another Country. It is a unique musical experience that encompasses everything from church celebrations to conversations with others and social messages. The album's creation began with a Baldwin tribute event in New York City in 2016.Michelle, who says she was deeply impressed by his book, "The Fire Next Time," says, "It was like a revelation to me and comforting in many ways. Especially in the first chapter, it was as if it was about my family. I grew up surrounded by black men who didn't want to be thought of as soft," he writes in A Letter to My Nephew. He said he came away with a deeper understanding of theThe album title, "No More Water," is a reference to Baldwin's writings, the lyrics of the Negro spiritual "Mary Don't You Weep," and, further back in the Old Testament, the phrase from the "Noah's Ark" chapter of "Genesis. The song was produced by Michel himself and Produced by Michelle herself and guitarist Chris Bruce.Participating musicians include Julius Rodriguez, Josh Johnson, Abe Lounds, Justin Hicks, and other up-and-coming young talent, as well as Jamaican poet Stacey Ann Chin, who has been featured in works by Robert Glasper and Tana Alexa, and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Hilton Als, who also participated in the reading. Als also wrote the liner notes for the album, which is also available as a 3CD "highlights" package in a 2LP vinyl version housed in an eye-catching gatefold sleeve.
