The first new quartet work in eight years from Mark Turner, one of the "most influential saxophone players" in the current jazz world! He brings his saxophone artistry and his musicianship to recordings with Enrico Lava, the Billy Hart Quartet, the Frye Trio (with Jeff Ballard and Larry Grenadier), Stefano Bolani, and most recently with his duo recording with Ethan Iverson, Temporary Kings. Mark Turner, who has become an important presence and a frequent participant in ECM recordings over the last decade, is back with his first leader quartet work since 2014's Lathe of Heaven. With the exception of Joe Martin, who also played bass on the previous quartet's "Lathe of Heaven," the quartet features new members, including NY-based trumpeter Jason Palmer, California-based drummer Jason Palmer, who has toured with Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock, and drummer Joe Martin, a former member of the ECM touring band. Jonathan Pinson, a California-based drummer who has toured with Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock.The film takes its title from the 1961 novel "Return from the Stars" by Polish science fiction writer Stanifław Lev, in which an astronaut returns from an exploratory space mission to find that life on Earth has changed dramatically and that there is a misalignment between himself and the values of a conformist, risk-averse society. The name is taken from the book "Return from the Stars" by Polish science fiction writer Stanislaw Lev. The album contains eight songs written by Turner for this quartet. The songs are given ample space for the members, and the interplay between Turner and Palmer and the free-moving rhythm section are all worth listening to, making this a remarkable work with an exhilarating and thoughtful arc of expression.
