Danish pianist still going strong at age 80! Beethoven, Chopin, and Brahms played by veteran pianist John Damgaard, who was once a visiting professor at Musashino Academia Musicae! Danish pianist John Damgaard studied at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY, the Royal Danish Academy of Music with Georg Vacherhely, then in London with Ilona Kabos and in Italy with Wilhelm Kemp. He has taught at the Royal Academies of Copenhagen and Aarhus, and has been a visiting professor at the Musashino Academia Musicae in Tokyo and the Australian National College of Music in Melbourne. He has given concerts in North America, Russia, the Baltic States, Italy, France, Belgium, Japan, and Australia, and has released numerous CD recordings of Ravel and Schubert. The "Piano Sonata in A-flat major," one of three sonatas composed by Beethoven between 1820 and 1822, begins with a cantabile theme, "Moderato," a second movement "Scherzo," and ends with an "Adagio and Fugue.The Sonata No. 3, dedicated by Chopin to Countess Emilie de Pertuis, is said to be the most technically and musically difficult of his piano works; the 28-year-old Brahms composed the Sonata for Clara Schumann, using the technique of "variations" and a variety of musical ideas; the Sonata No. 4, dedicated by Chopin to the Countess of Pertuis, is the most difficult of all his works. Variations on a Theme of Handel and Fugue" for Clara Schumann. The booklet notes, which discuss "Handel Variations" from a new perspective, are also written by Damgaard himself. Tokyo M-Plus
