Description:

Haydn's masterpiece, a moving work completed by Dominique Verrard, with the heavenly sounds of Ensemble Gilles Banschois! Haydn's "The Last Seven Words of Christ on the Cross" was composed for Good Friday services to be performed during the reading of the seven words of Christ in the Gospel. Originally composed as an orchestral piece, Haydn himself also arranged it into string quartet and oratorio versions. Although written in 1999, it is entirely in the old music style, with each piece set in the same key as its Haydn counterpart. Each piece is set in the same key as its Haydn counterpart, with Christ (tenor) as the main figure, the Virgin Mary (low soprano), and angels (soprano) answering in echoing fashion. The Ensemble Gilles Banschois has three members this time. Junko Takayama, a Japanese soprano, joins the ensemble and delivers transparent and pious harmonies. King International
