Songs of the Earth in a piano accompaniment version with Mahler's autograph score! In 1907, Mahler encountered a collection of poems, "The Chinese Flute," translated by the German poet Hans Beethge. Mahler, then 46 years old, was at the height of his career, having completed his gigantic "Symphony No. 8," and was also gathering fame as a conductor. At the same time, he was facing a critical turning point: the death of his daughter and his own diagnosis of heart disease, among other things. In a letter to Bruno Walter, Mahler said, "Of all the works I have composed, this is the most personal. Like most of Mahler's song cycles and serial works, "Ode to the Earth" was conceived in both piano and orchestral versions. The piano version was not published during Mahler's lifetime, but in 1989, decades after his death. Anglo-German contralto Claudia Hackl, the first woman to receive the Birgit Nilsson Prize in 2013, has performed with orchestras in Europe and the United States and has appeared in numerous operas.The album was the brainchild of Huckle and was recorded with tenor Nicky Spence, who is active in the UK and internationally, and conductor and pianist Justin Brown, who has performed with orchestras around the world.
