Amaro Freitas, a pianist from Recife in northeastern Brazil, whose previous work "Rasif" (2018) received worldwide acclaim for its "astonishingly unique approach to the keyboard" (Downbeat) and other accolades, has garnered a great deal of attention here in Japan, not only from Brazilian music fans, but also from jazz listeners. Amaro Freitas released his long-awaited new album "Sankofa"! Sankofa Sankofa is a symbol depicting a backward-facing bird in the Ghanaian symbol adinkra, which represents a concept or saying. He became interested in this symbol when he happened to see it on a robe during an appearance at an African fair in Harlem, New York, perhaps in consideration of the birthplace of great jazz pianists such as Monk and Tatum, and by learning deeply from it, it became the concept for his new album It became the concept for the new album. In Amaro's own words, "There is a wealth of ancient philosophy in the history of black people prior to slavery, and by understanding the history and strength of our people, we can begin to understand where our aspirations, dreams, and hopes come from."As with previous works, the recording was done with Gene Elton (bass) and Hugo Medeiros (drums), who have been members of the Amaro Freitas Trio since its inception. The work took about two years to complete, during which time they spent eight hours a day, four days a week in the studio together. It is through this process that the dense ensemble is built, using intricate rhythmic patterns and time signature changes as if reconstructing the designs of ancient ancestors. The album begins with "Sankofa," a quiet song with a powerful vitality, followed by "Baquaqua," about Mahomma Gardo Bacaca, who was brought to Brazil as a black slave but later escaped to New York, where he learned to read and write, and "Sankofa," a song with a gorgeous, fluttering piano reminiscent of Bill Evans and Thelonious Monk. The brilliant, fluttering piano of "Baquaqua" reminds one of Bill Evans or Thelonious Monk, while the shuffling hi-hats and swaying groove of "Ayeeye" evoke D'Angelo or Alicia Keith, and "Nascimento" is dedicated to Milton Nascimento, who performed with Criollo on the EP "Existe Amor". Such as.The result is a masterpiece of an out-of-the-ordinary jazz piano trio that combines a rhythmic approach reminiscent of Vijay Iyer and others, jazz idioms, and ancient black culture.
