Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (1714-1788) was the second son of J.S. Bach and Maria Barbara. The period in which he was active was about to change from Baroque to Classicism, and his works were in the "Gallant style" (clear and concise, a reaction against the overly florid Baroque style), which he inherited from Telemann. This collection of religious songs, more in the vein of Beethoven and Haydn than in the style of his father Bach, is both free and full of flowing melodies.
