The Ebène String Quartet is joined by Antoine Tamestit for a performance that is fresh and captivating, thanks to its heartfelt warmth and dialogue with each instrument. Mozart's two string quintets here, composed as a pair in 1787, are of contrasting character, and may be likened to Symphonies Nos. 40 and 41, the beautiful melodies throughout being among the most deeply melancholy of his many works. This string quintet is a work that is very much like Mozart's Symphony No. 41. The string quintet is a string quartet with an additional viola, and the interplay of sounds is complex, with the balance of the middle part of the sound being more important than the purity of the string quartet's sound. The Ebène Quartet is lush and fresh, and above all, a close ensemble full of supple song and transparent sound due to the superb balance that has been brought back to life. And with the addition of viola player Antoine Tamestit, who has been called the world's greatest violist, a musician of unparalleled technique and deep artistry, and known for his beautiful, rich, deep, and polished tone quality, the warmth of his heart and his dialogue with each instrument make for a fresh, enchanting performance that is truly something new.
