Description:
Finally, Poulenc also appears on period instruments! Romano and the Ensemble Edes, who first attracted attention with their disc of Stravinsky's "Marriage" and Ravel's "Bolero" (AP.300/KKC.6647) with its heavenly sound reminiscent of medieval polyphony, present their long-awaited new recording of Poulenc's "Stabat Mater", the orchestral part of which is played by Les Siecle. The orchestral part is played by Les Siecle, and this is the first performance of the 1950 work on period instruments. Romano, who was a pupil and assistant to Lotto, was strongly influenced by his teacher, and his pure non-vibrato tone, as well as his rhythmic sharpness and propulsive power, are appealing. Both of these are the key points of Poulenc's music, thus realizing an ideal world. Although the orchestration of "Stabat Mater" is large, Romano delivers a beautiful performance with the clarity and energy that one would expect if Lotto were conducting the same piece. The coupling "Litania to the Virgin of the Black Robe of Rocomadour" features female chorus and organ. This is one of the most moving of Poulenc's religious works, and in keeping with the attitude of going back to the time of the first performance, the performance is given from an autograph score in the collection of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, leaving a vivid impression. Even more remarkable is their singing of Clément Jeanquin's chanson "Oh, sweet eyes" as an interlude to Poulenc's. Although it is said to be a love song to an unapproachable lady of the court, Romano suggests that it may be addressed to the Virgin Mary, and it is not out of place between the Litanies and the Stabat Mater, allowing for plenty of musical immersion.
