Schulhoff's popular "Zingaleska" is addictive fun! Violin-cello duets have been increasing since the early 19th century, around 1800, when the cello became louder (the advent of the modern cello), and have been an established combination that has colored chamber music for over 200 years since then. The works on this album were composed between 1909 and 2004, so it is a collection of modern and contemporary works, but the styles are all accessible and easy to understand, and the elaborate techniques used to express the content make for a rewarding listening experience. One can hear an extended cadenza in Martineau's second movement Rondo, bagpipe-like sounds in the middle section of Glière's second Gavotte, and gypsy-like music in Shulhoff's second movement. Performers Deborah Gonsalves and Bertolt Hamburger are colleagues in Spain's Galicia Symphony Orchestra, and as the duo Orphelion have performed throughout Europe, India, Japan, and South America. The booklet (12 pages, in English) includes a commentary on the composer and his works by Hamburger, who also performs.
