British pianist Harold Samuel (1879-1937) was the first pianist to specialize in the performance of Bach's keyboard works in late 19th and early 20th century England, and his pioneering recordings of Bach for HMV and Columbia received worldwide acclaim. Samuel established his reputation as a Bach player by performing an all-Bach program in London in 1919. Following a number of solo masterpieces, this collection of recordings of Samuel's scholarly and serious approach to Bach concludes with the "Brandenburg Concerto No. 5," recorded live in New York, and the "Violin Sonata" in E major, recorded in the studio with Isolde Menges.
