Description:
Imogen Horst:. Included in the album. Persephone/ Variations on Loth to Depart/ Who is he? */ Allegro assai/ On the Hill of West Hall/ Suite for Strings/ Festival Anthem*. Performers Alice Farnham (conductor) BBC Concert Orchestra BBC Singers*. The 35th anniversary edition of NMC, the British contemporary music label founded by composer Colin Matthews in 1989, is a collection of orchestral works by Imogen Holst, a composer who played a pivotal role in the label's founding. Imogen Holst, an English musicologist, conductor, composer, and keyboardist whose father was Gustav Holst, studied composition at the Royal College of Music under Vaughan Williams and Gordon Jacob. She is known for arranging and conducting works by her father, Gustave, and as a musicologist, for her father's biography and books on medieval music, English folk music, Renaissance music, and Baroque music. She left many works, numbering more than 200 throughout her life, unperformed, as if they were simply set aside while she was busy promoting her many educational roles and her father's music. On this album, we present the orchestral overture "Persephone," composed in 1929 and premiered under the baton of Malcolm Sargent, which combines originality, inspired flamboyance, and introspective music, and the "Festival Anthem," a 1946 arrangement of Psalm 104 for mixed chorus and organ orchestrated by Colin Matthews, with a new arrangement of Psalm 104 for orchestra and chorus. This is an excellent opportunity to rediscover Imogene's great legacy. Recorded January 27-29, 2024 at BBC Maida Vale Studio 1, London, England. (Tokyo M-Plus)
