David Frey, one of the most unique pianists in contemporary France and highly acclaimed for his profound interpretation of Bach, will perform Bach and other Baroque works for the first time in four years.
Leading French pianist David Fray releases his long-awaited latest album, "Baroque Encore. Included in this album are 19 gems by Baroque masters such as J.S. Bach, Handel, Rameau, Couperin, and Scarlatti. As the name suggests, the pieces are familiar and immediately appealing to the listener, as if they were the encores played at the end of a concert.
Behind these beautiful pieces, however, lies a deeply sad story from the days on the eve of the French Revolution. This program evolved from "The Forgotten Child," a work combining music and narrative that Frey co-created with his wife and director Chiara Muti (Riccardo Muti's beloved daughter). At its center is the story of Prince Louis-Joseph, born the eldest son of Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette, but who died prematurely at the age of seven just before the upheavals of the Revolution began.
Frey juxtaposes a major event in French history with the personal tragedy of a family, saying, "This album is without a doubt the most personal.The song selection itself has a meaning like a "personal diary" for me, not to mention its connection to "The Forgotten Child,"" he says. Each piece contains its own little drama.
Fray is acclaimed for his Bach performances, which "have an aristocratic elegance and create a tone that shimmers with light and shadow. In this work, Fray turns his expressive prowess to a diverse group of Baroque works. He reveals that he draws great inspiration from the harpsichord. I've been listening to how harpsichordists achieve a 'singing' cantabile and how they make complex polyphony sound easy to understand," he says. By combining this approach with the rich dynamics, delicate articulation, and versatile pedaling of the modern piano, he breathes new life into baroque music. Music is a living art, a mirror of life.
