In the late 1980s, underground musicians were a counterweight to the dominance of pop, rap, and glam metal on American radio, and in the mid-1980s, from Seattle in the west to New York in the east, bands immersed in a rougher, more forceful sound emerged. Grunge," a fusion of punk rock attitude, often disillusioned lyrics, and intense distortion, became a social phenomenon throughout the United States.
