Description:

An unreleased performance by the members of the Mothers of Invention, recorded in October 1966 for a documentary series exploring the state of youth culture at the time! “The Mothers were a one-of-a-kind group back then, and even though 25-year-old Frank Zappa hadn’t even been signed as an artist for a full year, he was already making a huge impact on the world. Looking back, it seems as though every step of that process was meticulously calculated and flawlessly planned.” —Joe Travers (Curator of the Zappa Family Tape Archive) In October 1966, the members of Zappa’s Mothers performed a stage show for a documentary program at TTG Studios in Los Angeles, where they had recorded their debut album *Freak Out!*, released that same year. Featuring local “freaks”—including Vito Polekas and Carl Franzoni—the performance captured the reality of the “freak scene” of the time as it truly was. The Mothers at that time consisted of Zappa (guitar/vocals), Ray Collins (vocals/tambourine), Del Cashier (guitar), Don Preston (keyboards/percussion), Roy Estrada (bass), Jimmy Carl Black (drums/percussion), and Billy Mundy (drums/percussion). This album is significant not only because it features performances recorded shortly after the addition of Mundy and Preston, but also because it is the only recording to feature studio musician Cashier. In addition to improvisations that evoke elements of "raga rock"—a genre derived from Indian music—the album features "Move On," a track exclusive to this release, as well as "The Electric Banana," which later evolved into "Absolutely Free" on the 1968 album *We're Only In It for the Money*, and “I Could Be a Slave,” which became part of the early Mothers’ repertoire. Throughout the album, the performances are thrilling and well worth listening to. Includes an English booklet featuring liner notes by Joe Travers (curator of the Zappa family’s tape archive). ◆Complete translation of English liner notes / Includes lyrics and English-Japanese translations ◆ SHM-CD format
