<50th Anniversary of Géza Anda's Passing> The world's first SA-CD release of the legendary recordings made with his friend Fritschay—including the complete Bartók piano concertos and Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 2, among others! Newly remastered from the original analog master tapes in Hungary specifically for this release Bartók’s three piano concertos stand out among the many works composed in the 20th century; in particular, the First and Second Concertos had a sensational impact across various fields by treating the piano as a percussion instrument with their intense rhythms. These early stereo recordings, made for Deutsche Grammophon by Geza Anda (1921–1976)—a fellow Hungarian who studied at the Liszt Academy—and featuring the Hungarian conductor Ferenc Fricsay (1914–1963), have established an unshakable reputation as a once-in-a-lifetime masterpiece since their release. Although they have been reissued many times, they had never been released on SA-CD. As they continue to reign as definitive recordings of these works even today, there have long been many calls for a high-fidelity release. Now, on the 50th anniversary of Géza Anda’s passing, it is finally being released on SA-CD! Furthermore, because the original CDs combined Nos. 1–3 onto a single disc, the “Rhapsody for Piano and Orchestra” was omitted from all editions except the early two-disc set. For this release, we have included this piece—which was originally paired with No. 1 on the first release—at the end of the second disc. We have also included “Brahms: Piano Concerto No. 2,” a masterpiece among masterpieces recorded in May 1960 with the Berlin Philharmonic. While this recording is often compared to the later 1967 DG Karajan recording, here Fritschi delivers a performance in perfect harmony with the orchestra. The sound of the Berlin Philharmonic at that time is also captivating. (1/2)
