Description:
Casadesus's rare stereo Philips "Emperor" paired with Rosbaud's outstanding Petrushka, taped some five months before his death. Newly restored from the original masters held in the home country, with a new introductory essay. This disc gathers two precious Philips recordings by Hans Rosbaud and the Concertgebouw Orchestra. Rosbaud (1895–1962), long regarded as a specialist in contemporary music, held music directorships with German radio orchestras and left an enormous quantity of broadcast material, but those broadcasts were almost all recorded in mono. These Philips sessions, made in stereo, are therefore prized as documents of Rosbaud's final years. Casadesus's "Emperor", taped in 1961, is one of his two authorised recordings of the work. Compared with the 1955 mono account with Mitropoulos and the New York Philharmonic, the stereo sound – and the markedly different orchestral colour – allow Casadesus's more delicate touch and the flowing orchestral accompaniment to blend to admirable effect. Rosbaud's roots lay in Austria: he was born in Graz, the same city as Böhm and just a year before him. His precise phrasing and firm grasp of a work's overall architecture place him squarely in the mainstream German tradition, and the same low centre of gravity and classical rigour can be heard throughout the Bruckner symphonies (Nos. 2–9) recently reissued as an import. The Petrushka, recorded some five months before his death, uses the 1947 revision with its reduced double-wind scoring, and captures particularly well the orchestral colour of an ensemble that still retained a strong local character at the time. Recordings of this work by the Concertgebouw Orchestra are surprisingly scarce (Philips has Davis and a Kondrashin live performance, Decca has Chailly), which makes this an especially valuable document. For this restoration the original analogue master tapes held in the home country were revisited and newly digitised using high-bit, high-resolution mastering (192kHz/24bit). Each album's original cover design has been adopted, and a newly written introductory essay by Kentaro Watanabe appears in the booklet. Vintage+plus Vol.25 comprises seven titles in all.
