Recorded when Géza András was 41, this album has enjoyed overwhelming support since its release as a masterpiece that strikes a perfect balance between intellect and emotion among the countless recordings of the Schumann and Grieg piano concertos. It is now being reissued after a long absence. Kubelik and the Berlin Philharmonic, supporting Anda, are meticulous and well-disciplined, and their ability to complement the piano is particularly noteworthy. Although recorded in 1963, the DG recording is superb, and there is no doubt that this remains one of the definitive recordings of these works even today. In particular, Anda’s well-defined, beautiful, and smooth tone is magnificent, fully capturing the charm of the piano as an instrument. These superb performances of Schumann and Grieg by Anda and Kubelik are highly recommended as timeless standard recordings.
