Lidia Griftowska (b.1928), one of Poland's leading pianists, won a prize at the 5th International Chopin Piano Competition (1955). Since then, she has built an international career, winning acclaim at such international competitions as Schumann in Berlin, Busoni in Bolzano, and Rio de Janeiro, where she was invited to study with Michelangeli. He has been a juror at the Chopin Competition for many years, since 1980, and will again be named as an honorary juror for the 19th competition in 2025, when he will celebrate his 97th birthday. This album is a valuable record of his performances at the 1955 Chopin Competition, including the preliminary round, the finals, and the winners' concert, from each stage of the competition.The lucid and poetic performance of the young Griftowska, who has embodied Chopin's art for more than half a century, including fantasy polonaises, scherzos, etudes, and concertos, will be vividly revived.
