A development of the sonata form discovered by Liszt. Dante Symphony and Pathetique Concerto for two pianos! Franz Liszt was one of the many Romantic composers who struggled with the problem of sonata form, which had been perfected by the saintly Beethoven but had reached an impasse with the passage of time. Like Beethoven's "Ninth Symphony," Liszt found a way out of this impasse in the interplay between music and poetry, and the two pieces recorded here eloquently illustrate Liszt's pursuit of his own sonata form. The magnificent and dramatic "Dante Symphony" as well as the "Concerto Pathetique" use a very rare version in which Liszt's own cadenza is restored and Bülow's cadenza is omitted, rather than a score arranged and published in the 1870s by Hans von Bülow, who wrote the cadenzas. The Duo Solini Barbatano, formed in 2004, is one of Italy's leading piano duos.The two virtuoso musicians have been remarkably active in concerts and recordings, and were invited to perform in a special concert in Zagreb to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Croatia and Italy, where they also played the role of goodwill ambassadors.
