The opera "La Traviata" by Verdi (1813-1901). It is a timeless masterpiece that has been performed in theaters around the world to the delight of many. In this video, the lead role of Violetta is sung by the Russian diva Venera Gimadiyeva, a promising young prima donna who just finished her studies at the St. Petersburg State Conservatory of Music in 2009. Tom Cairns' direction is not the radical style that is in vogue these days, but rather a moderate one that enhances the singers and carefully traces the story. The stage is not unnecessarily flamboyant, and the contrasting colors suggest light and dark, making the stage "safe to watch.This accentuates the singing and acting of the singers, and we understand not only the beauty of Violetta, but also the naivete of Alfredo (American-born tenor Fabiano) and the reluctance of his father Germont (Greek-born baritone Christoyannis)...not in a cunning way, but in an unavoidable way...to force his young lover to part with him. We can understand why he forces his young lover to leave him. The music is conducted by Mark Elder, a conductor active mainly in the United Kingdom. His firm command of the entire orchestra and chorus gives Verdi's music mobility, and he carefully crafts the long passage to its desperate close. Naxos Japan
