Description:
Christie & Les Arts Florissants are scheduled to visit Japan for a performance of the opera *Le Chevalier Errant*, and this production is perfect for preparing for the show. Filmed in a beautiful church, it’s ideal for getting a feel for the music’s atmosphere. The documentary is particularly valuable, as opportunities to gain insight into this composer’s true character are rare. It is also highly recommended as an introductory resource to French Baroque music. Jean-Philippe Rameau moved to Lyon during his early career as a musician, and several motets he composed there still survive today. The grand motet “In Convertendo” (“When the Lord Restored the Fortune of Zion”) is among them, and on this DVD, Les Arts Florissants, led by Christie, performs it. The music foreshadows the orchestral style found in Rameau’s later operas. The magnificent fugue in the seventh movement, taken from Psalm 126, rivals similar works by his contemporary, Bach. In addition to the complete performance of “In Convertendo,” this DVD features Rameau’s major chamber music works and the thought-provoking music documentary “The Real Rameau.” “The Real Rameau” is a program that sheds light on the life of Rameau, a composer who thought only of music, dreamed of universal harmony, and believed that music was the model for all the arts—and even for all the sciences. Although Rameau’s contemporaries regarded him as gaunt, taciturn, and ill-suited to court life, Berlioz praised his works as the ideal of dramatic music. Having been forgotten for centuries, Rameau has finally, in modern times, taken his rightful place among the great composers, a status commensurate with the quality of his work.
