Description:
The setting is Verona in the 13th century. Capellio, head of the Capreti family, has had his son killed by Romeo, head of the Montecchi family, and he and his family's Tebaldo have sworn revenge. Capellio wants to marry off his daughter Giulietta to Tebaldo, but she is secretly in love with Romeo. Romeo, who visits the Capretti under false pretenses, begs Giulietta to run away with him, but she refuses out of loyalty to the family. She obeys his words. Romeo, seeing her fake funeral procession, is pessimistic and looks up to the poison alone... In 1826, Bellini premiered "Bianca and Fernando" in Naples, and his talent was recognized. After many successful operas, he was finally asked by the Teatro La Fenice in Venice to present a new production. He began work on a new opera in 1830, and Felice Romani, who was in charge of the libretto, provided a reworking of "Giulietta and Romeo," which he had written for Nicola Vacchai. Donizetti himself appropriated several melodies from his own "Zaira" to complete the work.The script has no direct relation to Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, and there are considerable differences in the treatment of the characters and the development of the story. There is also a version in which Romeo is sung by a tenor, but this performance, as written by Bellini, is sung by Sonya Ganassi, a veteran mezzo-soprano. Julietta is sung by a young soprano, Jessica Blatt. Her flowing coloratura and lyrical and graceful singing are impressive. Naxos Japan
