The essence of Mozart's masterpiece opera, "Cosi fan tutte" by Mehta, Bechtloff & Hampson! Fiordiligi and Dorabella, two sisters who have made a bet with Don Alfonso over the fidelity of their respective lovers, Guglielmo and Ferlando, pretend to be "going to war" and seduce each other in disguise. At first Guglielmo refuses, but gradually Dorabella becomes attracted to Guglielmo, and eventually Fiordiligi too is seduced by Ferland... Mozart's opera "Cosi fan tutte" was unpopular immediately after its premiere in 1790 because of its "immoral" content, It was performed infrequently during the 18th and 19th centuries, and was less popular than other Mozart operas. In the 20th century, however, the excellent psychological description of da Ponte's libretto and the rich and varied music composed by Mozart's ensemble were reevaluated, and the opera is now frequently performed as one of the most popular operas in the world today. This performance in Florence, conducted by Zubin Mehta, was orthodox, making full use of the slow tempo and the orchestra's resonance.The two pairs of lovers are fresh, young singers of the highest caliber, and the veteran Thomas Hampson as Don Alfonso leads the youngsters well with his own sprightly acting and singing. Sven-Erik Bechtolff's direction is full of humor and pathos, and together with the chic stage design and costumes, adds a grand flourish to Mozart's masterpiece opera. Naxos Japan
