Kansas Virtuosi Salgado, Luis Humberto (1903-1977)

Description:

Luis Humberto Salgado is a pianist and composer from Ecuador. While giving piano recitals, he also devoted himself to educational activities, teaching music theory at the National Conservatory of Music in Quito. He also wrote a newspaper column on the European music scene, and as a composer, he taught himself to compose without ever leaving Ecuador. His works include pioneering works that incorporate the twelve-tone technique and are characterized by a style that combines nationalism and modernism. He also created works based on Ecuadorian folk music and modernist works with atonal and complex harmonic language. During his lifetime, his works were rarely performed, but recent years have seen an increase in recording opportunities and a reappraisal of his work. The first two pieces on the album are San Juanito, a typical Ecuadorian musical genre, performed in a sextet version with two violins, cello, double bass, clarinet, and flute. The next piece on the album, a futuristic san Juanito, Microdansa, is a small piece for piano and is one of his best-known works, using the twelve-tone technique but retaining elements of folk music.Other unique works include "At Night," based on a pasillo derived from a European waltz; a song for soprano, in which he showed his outstanding talent as a lyricist; "Spanish Rhapsody," dedicated to Bogumil Sikora, a cellist and close friend of his; a violin sonata and a small piece; and "Piano Quintet No. 2," incorporating Ecuadorian folk dances. The concert also includes a violin sonata and a small piece, "Piano Quintet No. 2," which incorporates Ecuadorian folk dances, and other unique works. Naxos Japan
