In Trombone Journey, Vol. 1, "Winter Journey" (8.574093), Matthew Gee renders Schubert songs on trombone without the use of lyrics. He is the principal trombonist of the brass ensemble Septura, has been the principal trombonist of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra since 2010, and is a sought-after soloist as well as a mentor for younger musicians at the Royal Academy of Music in London. This second collection is a journey exploring British music of the early 20th century. The album is centered around a selection of three song cycles, all arranged for trombone by Gee. The opening song, Elgar's "Pictures of the Sea," was originally a series of songs for mezzo-soprano and orchestra. It depicts a variety of sea scenes, from a peaceful lullaby to a stormy sea. Vaughan Williams' "Songs of Travel" is a song for baritone. It is an episode of a noble traveler's journey. The trombone played by Gee gives a truly singing expression. The final piece, Stanford's "Song of the Sea," is a series of songs with chorus that convey the charm of the sea in clear harmonies.Gee has arranged this piece to be played by a trombone ensemble, and it conveys the full charm of the original.
