Description:
Huang Zi Huang (1904-1938), a composer from Chuan Sha County (now part of Shanghai), Jiangsu Province, studied in the U.S. in 1924 and returned to China to teach at the Shanghai Music Academy, where he trained younger students. He composed many songs and other compositions, but died suddenly at the young age of 34 due to illness. Although his works were forgotten for a time, they were revisited after the reforms and liberalization of China in 1978. The pieces on this album are prize-winning works from the International Piano Works Competition held to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Huang's death. The first prize winners out of 52 entries were "Celestial Parade" by Emil Naumov, who is also an accomplished pianist, and "Six Chinese" by Zhang Jiang Jiang's "Six Chinese Opera Beauties in Female Role". Second place went to Sun Hao Han's "Kodama in the Heavenly Pond" and Liu Bo's "Gasuo (meaning music or melody)," and third place went to Yu Pengfei's "My Home Field" and Li Shuying's "Five" respectively. The pianist Gianluca Luisi, who also performs, received the "Best Performance" award.
