Duke Wilhelm V of Bavaria (1548-1626), educated as a Jesuit from his childhood, was known as a faithful king and a promoter of the Counter-Reformation, More than 5,600 knights and other officials attended the ceremony, which was attended by the public and was a grand and spectacular celebration. The people enjoyed a horseback archery tournament with the knights in their finery, Jesuit theater, and a spectacular concert by Orlando di Lasso (Lassus), who had served as court music director since 1556. This album by Ensemble Origo is a free re-creation of the concerts of that time, based on the records of the period. The album sheds light on the music performed in the 16th century, featuring Lassusso's Te Deum and other improvised comedies. Naxos Japan
