The trumpet is one of the oldest instruments whose origins can be traced back to 2000 BC. The earliest trumpets were made from metal, animal horns, or conch shells and, when blown into the air, could produce a loud resonant sound that could be transmitted far and wide. The instrument was later modified in various ways. In the early 19th century, the valve was invented by Bruemel in Germany, followed by the invention of the piston by Labbaye in France, and then by Joseph Riedl in Vienna. Joseph Riedl of Vienna invented the rotary type, which improved on the valve, and the performance of the instrument developed dramatically. Then Perrine invented the three-piston system in 1839, an idea so revolutionary that it is used in most brass instruments today.
