Mozart composed many masses during his youth in the service of the Salzburg court. Among them, the graceful Missa Brevis K. 49, written when he was 12 years old, and the dramatic C major "Credo" K. 257, completed in 1776, are representative of this period in which he devoted himself to religious music. The "Credo" Mass is considered one of the most representative works of the Salzburg period, an original work that incorporates a dramatic structure and stage musical techniques based on the repeated "Credo" motif. Missa Brevis K. 65 was written in 1769 for an all-night prayer service in Salzburg, and its key of D minor, which is said to express solemnity and piety, emphasizes the solemn atmosphere of religious ceremonies. The Missa Brevis K. 220, on the other hand, is called the "Sparrow Mass" because of the birdsong-like motifs found in the Sanctus, and features effective use of brass and percussion instruments.
