Description:
A collection of string quartets by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, known as an outstanding guitar composer. Studied under Pizzetti and recognized by Casella, Castelnuovo-Tedesco was one of the most promising up-and-coming composers in Italy in the 1920s. His First Symphony, written during this period, is a beautiful, youthful work with a rustic flavor that seems to depict a rural landscape. Later, under the oppression of Mussolini's Fascist regime, he left Italy and fled to the U.S., where he worked as a film music composer, but after the war he visited Italy and saw the country transformed. The complex emotions he had at that time seem to have been reflected in his second quartet, which is full of dissonance and restless melodies. 1964's No. 3 has the subtitle "Casa al Dono," and its four movements are respectively titled "Return to Vallombrosa," "The Monastery," "The Little Train," and "Argument and Sunset. These are descriptive pieces that seem to draw inspiration and brightness from memories of home and friendship. Naxos Japan
