Description:
Bertolt Heinrich Brockes, a Hamburg-based politician and diplomat in the early 18th century, wrote the script of the Passion of Christ, drawing mainly on the Bible, but adding his own characters (such as "Daughter of Zion" and "Believing Souls"). The text was used as a basis for composers such as Joachim Kaiser, Georg Philipp Telemann, and Johann Mattheson, all of whom were prominent composers of the late German Baroque period. Handel, a friend of Brockes since his student days in Halle, was one of these composers. However, unlike the typical Passion style of the Baroque period, Handel created this work as an oratorio, a genre that would later become his specialty. This recording was made in 2023 at the Handel Festival in Halle, the composer's birthplace. Under the dynamic baton of Michael Hofstetter, whose repertoire ranges from baroque to modern opera, the singers, including Robert Cellier as the Evangelist and Vanessa Waldehardt as the Daughter of Zion, sing with great commitment, and the chorus participates in the drama as a crowd.
