This is the second collection of Beethoven's complete cello works recorded by Gabriel Schwabe, who has won prizes in three international cello competitions named after such greats as Feuermann, Rostropovich, and Fournier. The album includes Beethoven's third cello sonata, written in 1808, ten years after the completion of his first and second cello sonatas, and his fourth and fifth sonatas, written successively in 1815, which show the fullness of Beethoven's style as he returned to the genre. The third was composed at the same time as the fifth and sixth symphonies, and is a masterpiece of brilliant melody and virtuosity. Nos. 4 and 5 are short but concentrated works, especially No. 5, which features a fugue in the style of Bach. The Variations on a Theme from Handel's "Behold, the Brave One Returns" is a work that focuses more on the piano than on the cello, and is full of Beethoven's finely structured variations reminiscent of the "Eroica Variations.
