Description:
On the 325th anniversary of his birth, Leclerc, a great master of violin music representing the first half of the 18th century in France, completes the recording of his masterpiece, the 12 Violin Sonatas in Volume 3, which includes Nos. 9 through 12. During the 18th century, when Leclerc was active, Italian violin music by Corelli, Vivaldi, and others was very popular, and he developed his style by combining this brilliant style with traditional French dance forms. The four sonatas on this album are a clear example of this style, especially the last movement of No. 10, "Tambourin," in which Harty-Guardi joins the ensemble and adds a folk flavor to the work by sustaining the low notes. The final movement of No. 12, "Chacona," is a difficult piece that requires great virtuosity on the violin, and is a testament to the virtuosity of Leclerc as a virtuoso violinist. In this work, too, Butterfield, McMahon, and Wolston, with McMahon at the center, demonstrate their mastery of technique in a superb ensemble performance. Naxos Japan
