His research and knowledge of Portuguese folk and traditional music is an achievement comparable to Bartók's study of Hungarian folk music. He has left behind many works that incorporate folk melodies and rhythms into classical forms, and the unaccompanied choral works on this album are truly the pinnacle of his creative output.
