In 1815, the 23-year-old Rossini premiered "Elisabetta" at the Teatro di Napoli and achieved overnight fame. From then on, he was appointed music director of the Teatro San Carlo with a lucrative contract and energetically produced numerous operas and vocal works. The cantata "The Marriage of Teti and Pereo" was written in 1816 to celebrate the marriage ceremony of the Bourbon royal family, who became Rossini's most influential supporters. The bride and groom are likened to the sea goddess Thetis and the hero Peleus. The orchestration and the chorus are powerful, and the ornate melody is enlivened by the skill of the popular singers of the time, including Corblanc, who later became Rossini's wife.
