This is the fifth volume in Vidor's Organ Symphony series. The organ symphonies are works inspired by the sound of the Cavaillé-Coll organ at Saint-Sulpice Church, where Vidor worked as an organist. Although played on a single organ, the works are entitled "Symphonies" and are characterized by their colorful tones and solemn sound. Symphony No. 5, written in 1879, is a magnificent work in five movements, the last of which is the "Toccata," one of Vidor's most well-known works. The "Toccata," with its cascading organ sounds, is known for its brilliant atmosphere, and is highly popular, having been performed at weddings in Denmark, Norway, and the British Royal Family. No. 6 is in five movements, and was premiered by Vidor himself at the Paris Exposition of 1878. Together with No. 5, it was published by Amel in Paris. Vidor often revised his own works, and the fourth movement of No. 8 recorded here is also a movement that was left out of the 1901 revision. Naxos Japan
