This collection of orchestral works by Elisabetta Brusa, a female composer born in Milan in 1954, is a long-lived series, with the first and second collections released in 2002, followed by the third collection in 2015 after a gap of over 10 years, and now this fourth collection. Symphony No. 2 is a large work that took 10 years to complete from sketches. It took another seven years before the orchestration was completed. Written in a classical four-movement form, it is a richly resonant and impressive work. The first movement opens with the first theme, with brass fanfares appearing throughout, followed by a beautiful second theme similar to the slow movement of Mahler's No. 6, but the calm is soon disturbed and the tumultuous music returns. The second movement is calm and anxious music. The third movement is an impatient scherzo. In the decisive final movement, the opening motive dominates the music to the end, and the music closes as if it is being driven out. Simply Largo, which Brusa calls "a short 'wordless song' full of sorrow," is also beautiful music. Naxos Japan
