This is a collection of Beethoven's vocal works composed for various occasions. Some were written for a friend's wedding, some were written as a farewell to a departure, some were written to celebrate a nameday, some referred to Freemason paintings, and some were written to Schiller's poems. The small pieces, which seem to capture a slice of everyday life, have an intimate atmosphere that dispels Beethoven's staid image. Also, the rarely heard "Polyphonic Lieder in Italian," a collection of songs on poems by Metastasio, was written by the young Beethoven when he arrived in Vienna. Salieri, who was teaching Beethoven at the time, is known to have made revisions to some of the songs, and this album shows Beethoven's struggles by playing Salieri's revised manuscripts side by side.
