Michael Haydn, five years younger brother of Joseph Haydn. He is known as Weber's teacher and played an important role in bridging the gap between the Classical and Early Romantic periods. Unfortunately, he has been overshadowed by his great brother's fame, and even today it is difficult to say that his works are justly judged. However, his music is colorful, original, and not inferior to his brother's. His religious music, in particular, is central to his work. His religious works, in particular, occupy a central place in his oeuvre and are all full of vibrant sounds and lyrical melodies. The "Mass of St. Nikolai Trentini" is Michael's first large-scale religious work, dedicated to the 13th-century Italian Augustinian monk St. Nikolaus. Women were forbidden to sing in the monasteries of the time, and it is speculated that Magdalena Lipp, who later married him, sang the solo at the premiere of this work. The "Evening Prayer for the Feast of the Innocent Child" is a collection of works on psalms completed by Nikolaus Lang, the cleric of Salzburg Cathedral at the time.Enjoy the sprightly performance under the sympathetic direction of Tom Wimpenny.
