Beethoven's 90 or so songs are supposed to have contributed greatly to the development of German Lieder, but in modern times they are rarely performed and have been overshadowed by orchestral and instrumental music. This first collection includes a variety of Beethoven's Lieder, including several different manuscript versions. Not only interesting works such as the dramatic "The Magic King," reminiscent of Schubert's masterpiece, and the joyful and lighthearted "New Love, New Life," but also works for which different manuscript versions exist allow us to hear the painstaking process of elaboration and to see the unknown face of Beethoven. It will be interesting to listen to the differences between the three versions of Krächen's song from the incidental music "Egmont.
