Beethoven's time in Vienna was tumultuous, with Napoleon's armies invading Vienna and the Habsburg Empire and ending bishopric rule over his native Bonn. The effects of this battle are reflected in Beethoven's works of the time, culminating in several marches. Beethoven's interest in wind instruments at the time led him to write numerous works for wind instruments. Among them, the "Three Equale" for four trombones is rarely performed, but it is known as the piece that was played at Beethoven's funeral in 1827. Some pieces were also written for "automata" (musical puppets or musical clocks), which were popular at the time, and are played on the organ in this album. The "Quintet for Piano and Winds, Op.16" contains a piano quartet version arranged by Beethoven himself. The selection also includes many other unusual dances and other pieces. Naxos Japan
