Joaquin Rodrigo is one of the greatest Spanish composers of the 20th century. Although he lost his eyesight as a result of a childhood illness, he achieved great success as a pianist and composer. He is widely recognized as a composer of guitar music, with his "Aranjuez Concerto" regarded as one of the finest guitar concertos ever written. His works are highly original, extending the Spanish Romantic tradition of Albeniz, Granados, and Falla, as well as incorporating the French Impressionist style he developed while studying in Paris. This album features a variety of works that combine tradition and innovation, including "Pastoral Songs for Guitar," written in sonata form, "Cecilia's Album," a collection of lovely piano pieces dedicated to Rodrigo's daughter Cecilia, which Pepe Romero arranged for guitar, and "Two Little Fantasias," Rodrigo's last guitar work. The concert will feature a variety of works that fuse tradition and innovation. Jeryl Lefik Kaya, born in Istanbul in 1991 and winner of the top prize at the 2012 Joan Falletta International Guitar Competition, has released four highly acclaimed albums on NAXOS, including Barrios' guitar works.
