Description:
During his long life of 86 years, Saint-Saens witnessed the transition from early Romanticism to Impressionism, and in his later years he even dabbled in composing film music. Although he left many works, only a few of them are performed today. One of the reasons for this is that he was "conservative in style," and indeed, the sonatas for clarinet, oboe, and bassoon that he composed one after another in the year of his death are full of extremely romantic sentiment. The cello pieces on this album are richly emotional works that clearly demonstrate Saint-Saens' good taste, and the cello is used to its fullest extent. And let us not forget the "Swans". Among the mangy and ironic "Carnival of the Animals" suite, this is the only one that stands out from the rest, a masterpiece among masterpieces. The graceful melody of the cello has a strong appeal to people. The performance by Schwabe, a cellist of note, is a must-see. Naxos Japan
