Description:
The first concerto, composed in 1933, is a "double concerto" in which the trumpet plays an equal role with the piano, and was originally written as a trumpet concerto. The piano part was added to balance the overall composition. The overall atmosphere is similar to that of "Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk County," which was written around the same time. The piano and trumpet are sometimes at odds with each other, but in the second movement they sing a beautiful and sombre waltz. Composed in 1957, No. 2 was written as a piano exercise for his son Maxim. The third movement is famous for its allusion to the "Hanon" (a typical piano exercise), which also has a beautiful waltz in the second movement, and Giltburg was aware of this and planned to focus on Shostakovich as a "waltz composer. He himself arranged the fourth movement of the String Quartet No. 8 and the third movement of No. 2 for solo piano to express the delicate rhythmic swings of the waltz.
