In Volume 1 (8.572738), many listeners were overwhelmed by the power of these works. This is the second volume of flute concertos by the little-known Classical-era composer Hofmeister (1754–1812). Born in 1754 in Rothenburg am Neckar, Hofmeister initially studied law in Vienna but, having decided to pursue a career in music, taught himself composition. In 1778, he was appointed court Kapellmeister in Széchenyi, Hungary. He spent three years there. Eventually, he founded a music publishing company and, while facing numerous difficulties, published works by Mozart and Beethoven. At the same time, beginning in 1798, he resumed his career as a musician, as he had long hoped. He was very active, even going on concert tours with the flutist Franz Turner. Although his own works were largely unknown, on this NAXOS release, flutist Mayer himself has created a new edition—including cadenzas—and is working to popularize this captivating collection of works.
