Description:
The photograph used on the cover of this album is very pretty and delicate, but the music you actually hear is very powerful and wild. The composer Roja (1907-1995) is already well known as a maker of film music, and this string quartet is the result of his intense, "Magyar bloodthirsty" music. String Quartet No. 2 was composed in 1981 in a summer resort in Italy and premiered in Paris in October 1982. This lively work, full of ceaseless energy, could hardly have come from the hands of a man of advanced age. The String Trio, on the other hand, was begun in 1927 and is the ambitious music of a young composer. The work was largely revised in 1974, but what you hear here is the original form as it was before the revision. The first string quartet was written in 1950, and is generally more exotic in mood.
