When one thinks of choral works by Brahms (1833-1897), the first thing that comes to mind is the German Requiem, but he wrote several other wonderful choral works. His first choral work was written in 1957. It is the Ave Maria recorded here. Later, in 1863, he was invited by the Zink Academy in Vienna as a conductor, and while premiering Bach cantatas and his own "German Requiem," which were well received by audiences, he began to master the choral material and create wonderful works. The majesty of "Alto Rhapsody" (an excerpt from Goethe's "Winterreise") and "Ode to Destiny," both of which were written later in his career, reveal a deep world that only Brahms could have written. Also, "Lamentations," written in memory of the painter Feuerbach, is full of sadness, but it is also beautiful music filled with tenderness and the light of hope.
